Every Alaskan knows it gets so cold in the winter that the tires on your car freeze flat. It takes a couple miles of driving for them to get round again. The first time this happened to us was so funny. It was 40 below zero, our first really cold spell since arriving in Alaska, and we decided to go to the store. We piled in the car and started up the road and our car was going bumpity bumpity bump and Jim said, “Oh, no, we’ve got a flat tire!” Berating himself for being so stupid as to leave home when it was so cold, he climbed out to find the tires looked fine. Puzzled, he climbed back in and we started off again, still hearing/feeling the bumps, but then they mysteriously faded away. Later, when we were telling our neighbor about this strange phenomenon, he laughed and said, “oh, your tires were just frozen ‘flat’ where they sit on the ground. They just needed a couple miles to round out again.”
